Laura has worked in the field of recreation for three years. She is most proud of her involvement in event planning with Vikes Recreation and the James Bay Community School Centre, as well as youth programming in the public and not-for-profit sectors.

Laura's experience as a program attendant with Recreation Oak Bay lay a solid foundation for her co-op placements in the Recreation & Health program. She developed leadership and communication skills while working with children and youth in afterschool care programs, childminding, birthday parties, and kindergym, which ultimately established her love of community recreation.

In 2013, Laura collaborated with the Childhood Obesity Foundation and the BC Recreation and Parks Association to develop healthy eating strategies and activities for children and families in BC. She also participated in provincial and national projects such as the MEND program (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do-it!) and the 'Healthy Food and Beverage Sales' initiative. These opportunities shaped her understanding of community health and improved her capacity for team-based partnerships.

WORK EXPERIENCE

During the summer of 2012, Laura worked as an Inclusion Facilitator with Recreation Integration Victoria. This experience changed her perception of working with individuals with disabilities and challenged her to be creative and flexible in the workplace.

More recently, Laura has worked as the Sport Clubs Assistant with Vikes Recreation at the University of Victoria, as well as a Recreation Program Leader at the James Bay Community School Centre. Her role within these organizations has grown her ability to work in an administrative environment, plan and lead programs for children and youth, and organize special events. She plans to continue working with Vikes
Recreation until completion of her degree in Spring 2015.

In looking ahead, Laura is excited to pursue her interest in active, healthy living and hopes to continue building healthy families and communities in BC.
